If I worked for Kanye

So I was thinking that if I had an IN with Kanye West, I would suggest a meeting for him with one of the major ballet companies (preferrebly one in NY so I could see this wonderful idea of mine come into action) It would be a Kanye West/Ballet smash-up to coincide with his new album "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy". Since Runaway worked so well with ballet, why not take it a little further.

You could keep the phoenix story-line going, or perhaps a kanyefied version of The Red Shoes.

Not sure if anyone remembers The Joffrey Ballet's production of Billboards in 1993 that featured all music by Prince.
My dad taped this for me from an airing on PBS and I used to watch it non-stop. In fact, I'm thisclose to buying someones' used VHS copy they are selling on amazon for $19.

This production worked quite nicely for Prince, let's go Kanye.

And remember, you heard it here first. If this actually happens, I want some damn credit Mr. West.

life imitates sesame street...

So, I was browsing some sesame street videos. Yeah, yeah yeah, I know i really need to get over my elmo obsession.

But I realized that even though I have "grown up" (sort of) Sesame Street is still relevant in my life.

SESAME STREET vs. MY JOB

Oh doogie, I think I was hired at the wrong company.  We are way behind the times.
I didn't know that all I needed was a pair of fairy wings and a broadway singing voice.
I could have the entire fall collection done in a snap.

SESAME STREET vs. PERSONAL APPEARANCE

It's taken me all of my life to finally love my hair. And just for the record I have worn my hair "up", "down", "twisted all around".  Yup, braids and pigtails too.  And "in barettes" and "flying free".   I'm convinced that someone at the Jim Henson workshop found pictures of me as a child and molded this little girl after me.  I have finally found my muppet twin.

SESAME STREET vs. MY MARRIAGE

kissing, hugging, friends, helping....yup that pretty much sums it up.  Grover may have left out a few crucial elements but he got the basics....good enough for me.  Maybe the US government should watch this.

SESAME STREET vs. MY DIET

enough said

SESAME STREET vs. PERSONAL HYGIENE

OK, so I don't smell like a monster.  But this is hilarious and I had to share it!

So, thank you Sesame Street for still teaching me a thing or two.

Happy Birthday, Grandma

Today would have been my grandmother's 101st birthday.  17 days ago she passed away and re-joined my grandfather after 35 years apart.  Those who know me, know I am not religious; but I like to think that they  are together again in some shape or form.  My grandmother raised 4 amazing children, one of them being my father, Marcel.  My daddy is the most amazing man in the world.  He is patient and kind, incredibly smart, always willing to lend a helping hand to a friend or a stranger.  My husband grew up without having a father in his life, so I know how lucky I am that mine is so great.  Some of my best memories with my dad are taking the trips to Groton, CT to visit Grandma.  The three hour rides were usually spent listening to Disney movie soundtracks and stopping in New Haven for Kentucky Fried Chicken.  And when we would get to grandma's house I would always look for her face peeking out from behind the curtains; waiting for us.  We would spend the day at the beach near her house or take a ride to Mystic Seaport.  I used to love to look at all the books that she had on her shelves and all the pictures of family in her bedroom.  And when we would leave (after my dad drank some of grandma's very strong coffee) she would always give me a hug and a kiss and slip money in my hand.  And it wasn't about the money, it was the way she did it.  Grandma would fold the money up and slide it in my hand really slick-like and then smile big and make sure I didn't try to give it back.

Over the years I lost touch with my grandma.  I guess life just got in the way.  I am regretful that I didn't talk to her more often on the phone or go see her on weekends.  I am not sad that my grandmother passed away, I know that she lived a very long and very full life.  My family is incredibly lucky to have had her in our lives for so long.  I am more sad that I didn't get a chance to know my grandmother more intimately in my adult life.  I am sad that I didn't get a chance to show my grandmother who I am and who I have grown up to be.  I know that my love of sunshine and reading I inherited from her.  My independence and strong will is also a part of her.  And though grandma is no longer with us physically she is still a part of my family in all of our hearts.

Below is a chronology my Uncle Rudolph wrote of the incredible life of my grandmother, Else Milfort.
    1. Else's earliest memories as a 5year in her birth town of Diedenhofen, Germany, were vivid. It was a small town in the Alsace region - a disputed area with France. Memories included fear, hunger and  the sights and fearsome sounds of a raging WW I.
    2. The family moved to and Else worked in Berlin as a teacher. Her two brothers pre-deceased her by more than 60 years.... the younger brother during WW II as a German Luftwaffe pilot, whose body was never recovered.
    3. Else's last employment in Germany was as a governess to 2 children of a Jewish family. Thus began her movements away from her native country. First,  accompanying the children out of Germany, to re-unite them with their  parents in Czechoslovakia where they had escaped to earlier; then to Amsterdam with the family, and finally, with the family, to the Dominican Republic. She met her husband Marcel there, fell in love and married, and yet another transition of her life began.
    4. Their lives moved several times between the Dominican Republic and Haiti on that 2 country island of Hispaniola, with each of the two pairs of the boy/girl sets of children born in each of the two countries.........Marcel and Evelyne in the Dominican Republic and Rudolph and Sonia in Haiti.
    5. Else's transitional life once again was destined for change, when in 1949 she moved to the United States - traveling with 4 children in tow, to join her husband who had come here 3years earlier, to work, send money back to Haiti, and save enough to send for her and the children.
    6. Else and Marcel successfully nurtured, raised and educated their 4 children. All this during an era that was very different from the world we live in today. Her strength, commitment, devotion and love for her family are to be marveled at, acknowledged and appreciated.
    7. The next transition came 35 years ago in 1975, when her husband Marcel passed away. She accepted that loss with the same strength she had displayed her entire life. She found renewed happiness in other things that brought her joy. The simplicity of sitting in the sunshine - which she truly loved. Her love for Opera and especially her all time favorite performer Placido Domingo -- whose collection of autographed books and photographs, secured at live performances, was truly cherished. She was able to travel on several occasions with her daughters, back to Haiti and Germany.
    8. Else's next transition, at age 96, came 41/2 years ago when she moved into Fairview in Groton. At that age she acknowledged that she could use a little help in her daily life. The care, respect and understanding that the staff provided allowed her to thrive at her age, and enjoy those simple things that continued to bring her joy.
    9. Today we honor the memory of this extraordinary woman, wife, and mother whose strength, love, devotion, and independence were lived on a daily basis throughout her entire life. All who knew her were enriched by her.

More than food

I have recently been toying with the idea of blogging about other topics.

¿qué?

Yeah, I know..."skinny girl's FAT adventures" found on www.cheesyfriedgoodness.blogspot.com.
That doesn't really sound like the place you would find posts about my random thoughts on family, work, politics, tv, music, etc. I mean from the few people that actually read this blog, they all really seem to love the subject matter. If it's not broke don't fix it. Right?

RIGHT?

Except for the fact that my FAT adventures include more than just food. Just like everyone else I am traveling this journey called life and I'm not just eating my way through it. I am loving my way through it. I am crying my way through it. I am scratching my head and wondering how the hell am I going to get through it.

My life is CHEESY in that my marriage is warm and gooey with love but also a little salty. My life is FRIED, in that I am exhausted both physically and mentally from my job. But all in all my life is GOODNESS.

So maybe just maybe, this skinny girl can write about more than just food.

Randomness

Sorry bloggy blog! I know I have neglected you but please know that I still love you. In an effort to make amends here is a collection of pictures featuring foods I have experienced of the last few months.

"Five Guys"- cheeseburger and Cajun fries

"MacBar"-cheeseburger macaroni and cheese

"Waffle House"- waffles, bacon, eggs, and cheese covered hash browns

"Wet Willies"- Bar food with slushie drinks made with diesel grain alcohol.

"Sonic"- chili cheese dog, fries, chocolate shake

"Mama Mexico"- the only guacamole I'll eat.

"Max Brenners"- churros and hazelnut shake

"The River Grill"- filet mignon, t-bone steak, and duck....my dinner, my husbands dinner, and my mom's dinner

"El Bandido"- taco, burrito, enchilada combo

Hot, Hot, Hot

Date: August 17, 2010
Destination: Island Burgers & Shakes
Location: 766 9th Ave bet. 51st & 52nd street
Partner(s): Xtina

Death by Jalapeño pepper, this is not how I thought my life would end.  However, at about 7pm tonight that was exactly the thought running through my mind.  I like to think that I am pretty good with spice and hot foods.  I tend to put hot sauce on many common items such as pizza, eggs, chicken, spaghetti, etc.  I even eat whole jalapeño peppers.

Well at least I thought I ate whole jalapeño peppers.  I have since learned that this:

...is a pickled banana pepper.

and these....

....are the devils that caused my lips to swell, my tongue to set fire, and my eyes to water.

Needless to say,  I am a pepper novice.
:sigh:
I feel so inadequate.

Peppers aside I did end up eating at an awesome burger/shake joint tonight.  This little hole in the wall on the west side has an amazing menu.

Any menu that describes a meal as "BIG ASS" is a definite WIN!

I of course had to start off with a shake:

Then we needed a little appetizer called "Chiliworks with chips":

And then I got to the burger.  I ordered the El Camino (medium well burger, bacon, jack cheese, ranch dressing on sourdough bread)  I somehow thought it would be a good and tasty idea to order jalapeño peppers too.:

INSANITY!

I highly recommend this place.  The location is tiny, but the menu is huge!

* Side-note: they do not serve their burgers with French fries.  Instead they have a huge baked potato or potato chips!  yummy yummy in my tummy sans jalapeños!

My current lunch addiction

Date: July 19, 2010
Destination: Benihana
Location: 47 west 56th street bet. 5th and 6th ave.
Partner(s): Co-workers

Ok, so this may not fall under my usual categories of fried, covered in cheese, or dipped in chocolate; but it is seasoned thoroughly with salt so it gets a pass.

I HAVE A LUNCHTIME INFATUATION WITH BENIHANA.

Yes, the Japanese hibachi steakhouse. The same place that bops you on the head and takes a photo if you tell them its your birthday. I have been there 3 times in the past week. I can't stop. They have a fantabulous lunch special, which happens to price out the same as getting a sandwich and a bag a chips at any of the local deli's. In my book this definitely constitutes as more bang for your buck. I got to enjoy salad, hibachi chicken or steak (I go back and forth between the two), vegetable fried rice and veggies for around $10.

Ok, so what... I leave there smelling like hibachi, most of the chef's aren't even Japanese, and my fingers and toes swell to double their size because of the salt. But they have GINGER SAUCE and an onion volcano!

Enough said.

Missing you...

I believe I made a resolution back in April that I would post more often......

:cricket, cricket:

Ummm, yeah. I'm a liar.

I don't know what happened, it's not like I stopped eating or anything. I will keep trying to post my fatty experiences, and maybe a few others that deserve recognition.

Don't worry bloggy blog, I will never abandon you completely.

So, here is a quick photo of one of my favorite snacks with instructions on how to eat it skinny FAT girl style. I would have included pictures with each step, but I had already inhaled these cookies by the time I had the thought that maybe I should blog about them. I have no control :/

Step 1- pour milk into small glass.
Step 2- remove package of Double Stuf Oreos from kitchen cabinet.
Step 3- grab a paper towel (this will be important at the end)
Step 4- sit on a comfy couch in front of large television and put on a good movie (my movie pick today- Rocky Horror Picture Show)
Step 5- place milk, cookies, and paper towel on folding tv tray directly in front of you
Step 6- remove one cookie from package and hold between your thumb and index finger.
Step 7- Dunk cookie into milk completely drowning the cookie and the tips of your fingers.
Step 8- The cookie will cause the milk to form bubbles, wait until cookie stops bubbling approximately 8-10 seconds.
Step 9- remove cookie from milk and shake to remove excess milk
Step 10- shove entire cookie into mouth and enjoy!
*repeat steps 6-10 until an entire row of cookies is devoured
Step 11- Drink milk
Step 12- use paper towel to clean hands, face, chin, and front of shirt of all milk dribbles and cookie crumbs :)

Phone test with Mac and Cheese

This is a test to see if the love of my life (my iPhone) will allow me to publish posts on the go.

I just finished prepping my macaroni and cheese dish for tomorrows Easter dinner with the fam.

I really want to bake and eat it now. :(

Hopefully, if this blog app works. I'll be able to show you all the end product tomorrow.

G'nite all!

trailer trash and bald men....huh?

Date: April 1, 2010
Destination: Trailer Park Lounge
Location: 271 W 23rd Street
Partner(s): Xtina
Bonus: Max Brenner's Chocolate by the Baldman (841 Broadway/Union Square)

Ok, so I have learned that I am actually a terrible blogger.  I have not posted in over 2 weeks.  Shame, shame on me!  My excuse--the weather, maybe if it wasn't a torrential downpour everyday, and I saw a little sunshine every now and then; I might want to venture out into the concrete jungle.  My new April resolution is to post more frequently.   Hopefully today's beautiful weather is the start of a new sunshiny trend. With that being said, please proceed with the following post without judgment.  I am still feeling the aftershock of a the mess that I ate tonight.  As good as it all was, even my stomach was a bit stretched and feeling a little constricted in my skinny jeans. Grammar, spelling, and punctuation do not count!

So, my fatty fat buddy and I needed a reunion.  We hadn't gotten together since shake shack and waffles.  She just got back from Puerto Rico (so jealous!) and I wanted to take advantage of the nice weather.  OK, I lie I was just hungry.  We decided to head down to 23rd street and check out Trailer Park Lounge.  My mom had mentioned this place to me a while back and I remembered walking by it when I was at FIT.  The place is a riot!  It is super kitschy, decorated with all the crap you would find in Uncle Billy Bob's back yard. There were giant plastic snowmen, old store mannequins, tiki lights, and even a bowling pin lamp.

MY personal favorite was a picture of Santa Elvis!
So, let's get to the goodstuff...
Gotta love the roll of paper towels on the table!  I don't know about the rest of you, but that's what I use for napkins in my house.  There was no question....i was going for the Chili Dog with a side of tater tots.  Xtina went for the philly cheesesteak.

I really think the pictures speak for themselves....ummm YUM YUM!  My one mistake was that I didn't order cheese on the chilidog.  But you know you have a good friend when she shares her cheese.  Yes, Xtina did scrape peices of cheese from her sandwich onto my chili dog.  Now, that's love!!!

Feeling very satisfied but not quite ready to go home, we decided we needed dessert.  Sooo...it was off to the Bald Man!  Max Brenner's house of deliciousness. This place is a chocolate lover's dream.  And if you know me, you know I love my chocolate.  The moment you walk through the door you smell chocolate, I have to use all sorts of self control not to dip my head into the huge tubs of churning chocolate.  We decided we need Milkshakes.  Now normally, these monster drinks would be enough to satisfy the sweet craving.
But noooo....I'm greedy I had to order the "Melting Chocolate Truffle Heart Cake".  This fabulous chocolate cake is filled with your choice of raspberry, milk chocolate, or caramel filling (caramel for me please), served with vanilla bourbon ice cream, strawberries, and a milk chocolate shot.  Wait, a milk chocolate shot?? Yes it is shotglass filled with pure chocolate covered in whip cream.  Basically this was a diabetic's nightmare!

:sigh:....I'm in heaven and I don't ever want to leave.   Until next time, this is skinny fat girl signing out and hopefully not entering a diabetic coma.

I CAN COOK!!.....sort of?

So, my parents are in town this weekend.  And every time I go home, my mom alway makes a good home cooked meal, I felt it was my time to give back.  Now this may come as a shock to many, but I come from a family of healthy eaters.

They love veggies, fresh fruit, and phony meat products.  Wait....PHONY MEAT PRODUCTS??  BLASPHEMY!! Yes, that's right.  My dad is a wannabe vegetarian/vegan.  I say wannabe because he is not so strict all the time.  He loves meat, but he also loves life.  And he believes in a non-meat, non-dairy way of life.  He does on occasion stray off of his veggie path.  He is a sucker for chocolate, and don't leave any turkey legs lying around.  So, in order to kind of make everyone happy.  I decided to make Penne Vodka.  Now, this is a good choice.  You don't need to use meat for Penne Vodka so plus 1 for Dad, but there is still cheesy goodness so plus 1 for me!  And my mom is a happy with anything that contains alcohol so plus 1 for her!  It turned out to be quite a good meal.  Now take this one in readers, because it is not often you will see homecooked meals on this site!

Oh and to top things off, we have girl scout cookies from my neice Samantha!  PLUS 1 FOR EVERYONE!

Favorite of the Day!

Its March, which means the Easter candy has arrived.  So, I thought it would be a good time to pay tribute to PEEPS those cute little birdies that I love so much!! And I do have to admit, I ate 5 of these little buggers today!

So, here's my question to you all...What is your favorite Easter Candy?

Burgers, shakes, and wafel's...OH MY!

Date: March 8, 2010
Destination: Shake Shack
Location: 77th street & Columbus Ave
Partner(s): Xtina
Bonus: Wafels & Dinges (62st street and Broadway)

skinny FAT girl was experiencing a bit of the spring fever today.  I brought out the spring jacket, wore my cropped jeans, and then chased the ice cream truck down the street.  After about 5 steps, I remembered I don't run anymore, those Track & Field days are long over.  So, instead I text my buddy to find out if she was in the mood for some fatty fun.  And in true hungry friend fashion, she was totally down.

Our stop this evening was Shake Shack.

An absolutely fabulous little burger joint.  Upon arriving, we knew it was going to be good.  Any place that has a line on a Monday night is golden.  We decided to divide and conquer.  Xtina waited in line to place our order, while I stalked a young couple for their table.  After some evasive maneuvers, I was able to secure a prime seating location.  We waited for our little shack shaker to buzz, bouncing in our seats because we were so hungry!

Finally....it arrived.  And let me tell you, it was worth the wait.

The break-out star in this performance?....the cheese fries!  I mean don't get me wrong, the burger and shake were both amazing.  The burger was cooked to perfection, with just the right amount of oozey cheesy and a warm soft bun.  The shake was delightful.  It had a dark chocolate flavoring, and was just the right consistency.  But the fries....oooohhh the fries.  They were salty, cheesy, potato flavorful presents in my mouth.

So, honestly what could top such an evening?  A stop at Bed, Bath, and Beyond perhaps?  Ummmm, yes please.  There is something about that store that makes you want to buy random crap that you don't even need.  I had to hold my self back from purchasing an avocado slicer and a GIANT cupcake pan.  So you would think that would be the end of a fantabulous evening, right?.....WRONG!

This my dear friends, would be a Waffle (wafel) truck. Now, normally I don't usually run towards the mobile food carriers.  However, I just recently read about this particular truck and the sweet smell of breakfast/dessert food was hard to resist.  After a thorough explanation of the menu from the friendly Wafel Server, I happily decided on the Liege Wafel with belgian chocolate fudge and strawberries.

    CUE HEAVENLY MUSIC "HALLELUJAH"

Oh dear sweet waffle, how do I love thee?  Let me count the ways... The strawberries were fresh, the waffle was warm and sweet, and the chocolate was divine.  I suggest everyone to look out for this truck.  On Monday nights, its parked on Broadway between 62th and 63th Street.

And so begins the FAT adventures....
